We are becoming increasingly aware of the need to analyze the enormous amount of information we receive every day. This information helps us in our cognitive development and participates in the construction of our patterns of perception of reality. In the case of children and young people, these patterns are in continual development. Critical thought is a cognitive process that proposes the systematic analysis of information, opinion and statements that we accept in our daily life as valid or true. It is a basic skill for a competent, free and responsible citizen. It is not about questioning every information we get everyday, it is about being critical with the information that is relevant to us when we make up an opinion about something.

A third of U.S. middle and high school students use mobile devices issued by their schools. Many others use their own devices for their schoolwork, using software such as the widely adopted Google Apps for Education. If you have children in school, chances are good that people and organizations you don’t know are collecting massive quantities of information about your children and using this information for purposes you know nothing about. We don’t know much about how children’s information is used, or by whom, or for what purpose Once data is collected and the company that collected it uses it for its stated purpose, there is little in law or policy that prevents the company from also using the information for other purposes, such as “product development.” It may also sell the information to others for their use or archive it for possible later use. Many bills bearing on student privacyhave been introduced in the past several years in Congress and state legislatures, and several of them have been enacted into law. However, protection of student privacy remains limited. Our recent report explores how corporate entities use their involvement with schools to gather student data and how those data may be used for marketing and other non-school-related purposes. Although most people probably know that digital marketers targetand track children on the devices they use, many would be surprised to learn that schools now serve both as a portal to and reinforcer of digital marketing messages to children. In so doing, they lend companies that collect, sell, analyze, and buy data both enhanced credibility and access to vast amounts of education-related data. The digital world is a vast expanse of learning and entertainment. But it is in this digital world that kids are also exposed to many risks, such as cyberbullying, technology addiction, obscene and violent content, radicalization, scams and data theft. The problem lies in the fast and ever evolving nature of the digital world, where proper internet governance and policies for child protection are slow to catch up, rendering them ineffective.
Moreover, there is the digital age gap. The way children use technology is very different from adults. This gap makes it difficult for parents and educators to fully understand the risks and threats that children could face online. As a result, adults may feel unable to advise children on the safe and responsible use of digital technologies. Likewise, this gap gives rise to different perspectives of what is considered acceptable behaviour.
So how can we, as parents, educators and leaders, prepare our children for the digital age? Without a doubt, it is critical for us to equip them with digital intelligence. Digital skills call for digital training
So now we’ve established that training is going to be one of the cornerstones of beating the Digital Skills Shortage. But what kind of training? Digital! You wouldn’t teach someone about the future by using ancient history textbooks, and you can’t just rely on traditional face-to-face training to teach digital skills.
But aside from the fact that digital training matches the subject matter more closely, another thing to consider is the frequency of training. One of the big four accounting firms, Deloitte, suggested that half of all digital skills become obsolete within about 30 months, due to technological change and development [5]. So that means constant updates are needed. Now, you could call in an external trainer and organize a workshop on a large scale every couple of years, but we could be talking about costs of tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost working time, organizational time, and hiring trainers.
The idea is that if you have an online training program, then it’s simple enough to update the content as frequently as necessary. On a monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly basis; all that’s needed to keep training up to date is to stay abreast of any changes in the industry. Overall, this makes a lot more financial sense than offline training.
Besides this, a survey by Brandon Hall titled the “State of Learning” study, showed that employees expect continuous learning opportunities; for instance:
61% expect learning activity at least weekly, 90% expect learning activity at least monthly Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://gustmees.wordpress.com/2015/05/26/what-are-the-skills-needed-from-students-in-the-future/ https://gustmees.wordpress.com/2016/02/18/the-new-possibilities-to-learn-and-teach-with-ict/ https://gustmees.wordpress.com/2015/07/19/learning-path-for-professional-21st-century-learning-by-ict-practice/ https://gustmees.wordpress.com/2015/12/27/what-are-the-best-ways-of-teaching-and-learning-ideas-and-reflections/

E-mail spoofing is the forgery of an e-mail header so that the message appears to have originated from someone or somewhere other than the actual source. Distributors of spam often use spoofing in an attempt to get recipients to open, and possibly even respond to, their solicitations. Spoofing can be used legitimately. Classic examples of senders who might prefer to disguise the source of the e-mail include a sender reporting mistreatment by a spouse to a welfare agency or a "whistle-blower" who fears retaliation. However, spoofing anyone other than yourself is illegal in some jurisdictions. Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: http://www.scoop.it/t/21st-century-learning-and-teaching/?tag=Spoofing

The current political momentum around skills is certainly welcomed by those whom, as European Schoolnet, strongly believe in the importance of skills and education to thrive in society.
European Schoolnet is a Brussels-based network of 30 European Ministries of Education. We aim to bring innovation in teaching and learning. We therefore welcome the launch of the New Skills Agenda by the European Commission and support the priorities that are set within the agenda, in particular the emphasis on the need to develop digital skills.
From digital skills to the safe and responsible use of online technology, through the wide variety of ICT in education projects we are involved in, it is clear to us how much digital skills are needed for citizens to actively participate in today's digital society, and how central they are in shaping the personal and professional future of a connected generation. Our leading role in a number of European initiatives in the area of STEM and of Key Competences for lifelong learning has further strengthened our belief that investing in the development and recognition of a wide variety of skills is beneficial to learners’ personal development, active citizenship, social inclusion, and employment.
European Schoolnet looks forward to supporting the New Skills Agenda for Europe in the four major areas outlined below. We believe that our network of stakeholders (Ministries of Education, schools, teachers, researchers, and industry partners) together with our targeted actions, tools, platforms, and services are able to contribute to bring about change. - Foster the development and assessment of key competences
- Develop learners’ digital skills in school
- Enhance young people’s employability
- Develop students’ media literacy and critical thinking for digital citizenship

Ask successful people for career advice, and they’ll mention networking, for good reason. It works. That doesn’t stop people from hating the idea, though. One recent study on networking found words used to describe the process included "fake," "deceitful," and "disingenuous." With such a negative connotation, no wonder it’s easy to underinvest in building a network.
But master connectors know that it’s possible to avoid this trap. They figure out ways of getting to know people that feel more giving than fake, and then they develop habits that keep them connecting, even if it would be easier not to.
