How can digital capability promote teaching excellence?

Date 10/10/2016

New research commissioned by QAA and carried out by Sheffield Hallam University explores ways of using technology in teaching that are best for improving the student experience, and how institutions can put the findings into practice.

Technology does not always transform learning, say the researchers.

The report finds that:
technology may have the capability to transform teaching but is not always used to its full potential

technology can aid teaching, but is never a substitute for good teaching practice (such as student-centred learning)

we can and should measure student satisfaction with technology-assisted teaching, but only as one element of effective teaching

it is important to raise the digital skills of all staff, rather than just a few specialists.

Professor Chris Husbands, Vice Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University and Chair of the Teaching Excellence Framework, said: 'One of the most pressing of questions for university academics is to think in challenging and applied ways about the relationship between digital capabilities and teaching excellence. 'What makes that so interesting a question is the way it poses an enduring question: What does teaching excellence look like, in different contexts? And how does digital capability develop and what does it look like? 'It is important to explore and to understand the ways in which the opportunities afforded by changing technologies can support teaching of the highest quality.'

Attention Students: Put your laptops away

Attention Students: Put your laptops away | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

As laptops become smaller and more ubiquitous, and with the advent of tablets, the idea of taking notes by hand just seems old-fashioned to many students today. Typing your notes is faster — which comes in handy when there's a lot of information to take down. But it turns out there are still advantages to doing things the old-fashioned way.

Pedagogy Before Technology?

Pedagogy Before Technology? | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
Has there ever been a more exciting time to be a teacher? There is certainly more choice and opportunity, with access to tools that were merely an idea a decade ago. Global interconnectivity through technology has transformed the world of work. Offices are paperless; conferences are virtual and information is shared instantly. This is the real world; the future for our students.

Most Anticipated Back-to-School Technology (2014)

Most Anticipated Back-to-School Technology (2014) | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Back-to-school 2014 has elicited responses that are much more fragmented than I’ve seen in previous years. Even though I've always received a wide variety of responses (a reflection of the increasing number of options for educational hardware and software), I have in the past been able to identify a “Top 3.”  But this year, there’s no consensus, no runaway “three most popular” tools.

Engaging students has become increasingly difficult as technology has continued to shape our culture.  Overheads, DVDs, and lecturing just don’t cut it.  This is a generation of students growing up with YouTube, Vimeo, and Khan Academy to name a few.  So many creative, eye grabbing, funny videos to choose from, and all of them are available on a device that fits in their pocket.

Educational Technology and Mobile Learning: Top 11 Educational Video Websites for Teachers

Educational Technology and Mobile Learning: Top 11 Educational Video Websites for Teachers | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

The use of multimedia in the classroom is a great way of getting students engaged. One of the biggest challenges we all face today is how to hold students attention for a longer time. It seems like multitasking has taken every bit of attention from our students. No wonder,  the visual stimulus they are exposed to is huge : Tv, video gaming, social networking, texting, emailing, are but the emerging tip of the iceber and unless we seriously address this phenomenon  it will definitely grow out of control.
