Reading this article about giving learners voice and choice, and especially the quote from John Dewey, reminded me of former Georgetown School of Foreign Service Dean and legendary philosophy Professor Jesse Mann! And then I smiled!
Monica S Mcfeeters's curator insight,

I fully support the idea that giving the learner voice and choice over what is learned is the strongest way to promote knowledge and understanding. This type of learning/educational interaction places the student in the driver’s seat of responsibility and places the instructor as just one more critical resource whom analyzes needs along with the student, designs an education plan that aligns and addresses individual strengths and weakness in the educational design, then facilitates that plan and assesses success.

Case in point: My group has just released a new preprint (get it here) that shows how the WiFi information routinely collected by your smartphone can easily be converted to precise information about your location. WiFi routers reveal where you live, work, and spend your leisure time. While your phone may have told you that WiFi helps “improve location accuracy”, it may come as a surprise that:

Robin Good's insight:
Notwithstanding the viral content-marketing tam-tam keeps selling the idea of content curation as a miracle-shortcut to work less, produce more content and get all of the benefits that an online publisher would want to have, reality has quite a different shade.
Unless your readers are not very interested themselves into the topic you cover, why would they take recomendations from someone who has not even had the time to fully go through his suggested resources?
Can that be useful beyond attracting some initial extra visibility?
How can one become a trusted information source if one does not thoroughly look and understand at what he is about to recommend?
A lot more than the one needed to create normal original content. Read, verify and vet each potential resource, by taking the time needed to do this thoroughly. Make sense of what that resource communicates or represents / offers and be able to synthesize it for non-experts who will read about it. Synthesize and highlight the value of the chosen resource within the context of your interest area. Enrich the resource with relevant references, and related links for those that will want to find out more about it. Credit and attribute sources and contributors. Preserve, classify and archive what you want to curate. Share, distribute, promote the curated work you have produced. Creating it is not enough.
These are many more steps and activities than the ones required to create an original piece of content.
Robert Kisalama's curator insight,
April 18, 2015 11:37 AM
truly Curation should not be merely aggregating different links without taking off time to reflect indeed it is very to end up like some one buying clothes impulsively only to realise you could have done without some of them.

This graphic is so unique and informative. The "digital learner" section on the bottom right especially is a great visual summary of many of the other articles. It includes "adaptive learning", "eLibraries" and "digital textbooks", which are all topics that have been mentioned in other articles. Some points, like "3D Printing", add another layer of possibilities. What strikes me most about this is how the different fields flow together. It is a convergence of media, education and the work world, which makes a lot of sense. Just like the internet, everything is connected. It seems to be the top goal to become a literate "digital citizen" in the future...

Wow… what a fast and furious end to September as the #ukedchat masses discussed all things bloggery! There are a number of key #ukedchat contributors who have long advocated blogging as a tool for good. In this week’s discussion, they had a chance to convert the rest of us… and believe me, I think it worked! People spoke overwhelmingly positively about the potential for blogs to offer pupils an audience for their writing, however it soon became clear that blogs can be used in so many different ways and have many different purposes and goals. We discussed safety and workload concerns, how to use blogs to promote literacy and parental engagement and how blogging can improve pupils’ self-esteem. The doubters (of which I suppose I was one, having not really yet embraced blogging as a class tool…) were very quickly silenced as more and more educators tweeted about the positive impact blogging has had. I can honestly say that this week’s #ukedchat discussion has given me so much inspiration. In fact, I’m now working on a plan to change my KS3 writers club into a blogging club!
