EdTech has been a hot button topic for some time now, and the focus on generative AI in 2023 has only amplified interest in EdTech. Proponents see a plethora of ways that AI can improve education outcomes. AI’s potential for transforming education is real, but so are the dangers—so we must move forward with care and intentionality. It is with an eye toward care and intentionality that members of W2050’s Senior Fellows committee on education and work met to discuss how AI could—and how it should—impact education in 2024 and beyond.

Over the last few months I have been reading, writing, speaking, teaching and presenting A LOT about AI tools and the way AI is impacting on education. One question that I constantly get asked is whether artificial intelligence can replace teachers. It’s an interesting question and one that I think about a lot, so I thought I’d put together a list of 10 great things about human teachers and 10 great things about AI teachers and share a few insights about what might change over the next few months or years.

PARIS, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Sciences Po, one of France's top universities, has banned the use of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-based chatbot that can generate coherent prose, to prevent fraud and plagiarism.
ChatGPT is a free programme that generates original text about virtually any subject in response to a prompt, including articles, essays, jokes and even poetry, raising concerns across industries about plagiarism.

Despite all the teething problems, the results are impressive, disturbing, and impressively disturbing. The entire academic world, from elementary schools to top universities, is in turmoil, some out of dystopian panic, others out of utopian naiveté. Both positions are highly understandable.
For all readers to whom ChatGPT does not mean anything yet, we have asked ChatGPT to introduce itself briefly:

In the metaverse, students and educators may be physically situated far from each other, but they will be together, and accountable, within the same virtual space. Distance learning in the metaverse will feel tangible again – and if a lesson involves observing or handling an object, students will be able to do that synchronously, instead of passing it around the classroom. Students in the metaverse will truly be able to learn by doing, making lessons more relatable and memorable. The time and money spent traveling to and from field trips can be greatly reduced. These metaverse experiences will make learning more efficient and engaging, and also more efficient. They’ll open the door to even more group collaboration and deeper exploration of the broader world than the physical classroom can be able to provide.

A new law requires K-12 schools to add media literacy to curriculum for English language arts, science, math and history-social studies. "Media literacy can help change that, advocates believe, by teaching students how to recognize reliable news sources and the crucial role that media plays in a democracy. " “The increase in Holocaust denial, climate change denial, conspiracy theories getting a foothold, and now AI … all this shows how important media literacy is for our democracy right now,” said Jennifer Ormsby, library services manager for the Los Angeles County Office of Education. “The 2016 election was a real eye-opener for everyone on the potential harms and dangers of fake news.”

What is Creative Thinking?
Creative thinking is the way of thinking that leads to the generation of valuable and original ideas. All people are capable of engaging in creative thinking and practicing ‘everyday’ creativity (addressing everyday activities in a non-conventional way). Creative thinking can be applied not only to contexts related to the expression of imagination, such as creative writing or the arts, but also to other areas where the generation of ideas is functional to the investigation of issues, problems or society-wide concerns.
The PISA assessment will examine students’ capacities to generate diverse and original ideas, and to evaluate and improve ideas, across a range of contexts or ‘domains’. The assessment includes four domains: written expression, visual expression, social problem solving and scientific problem solving. In each of these domains, students engage with open tasks that have no single correct response. They are either asked to provide multiple, distinct responses, or to generate a response that is not conventional. These responses can take the form of a solution to a problem, of a creative text or of a visual artefact. Is ChatGPT the new teacher’s aide?
Teachers have said that the artificial intelligence tool, which can write anything with just a simple prompt, could save them hours of work—a game-changer at a time when teachers have a lot on their plates and stress levels are high.
Even so, some teachers say they worry that using the tool could strip away some of the creativity and relational aspects of teaching or introduce bias into lessons or feedback on student work.

As educators, we have a responsibility to deliver content in a way that supports our students’ current and future learning. Not only what students learn, but how they learn it. We need to create the conditions that allow students to demonstrate their self-directed learning in order to concurrently develop their knowledge and skills through semiautonomous learning environments. The learning industry has come a long way from the PC internet boom that gave rise to eLearning in the late 1990s. The second wave of mobile computing and social media ushered in microlearning through shorter, video-based learning on demand. Industry watchers are now suggesting that the third era of computing is upon us. Flat static pages on the PC and phone will be replaced by a metaverse of digital 3D spaces, where we interact as lifelike avatars. The metaverse is an embodied internet where you’re never alone. Unlike a Zoom call that is scheduled and disappears when you’re done, the metaverse is “always on” and affords social interactions with peers. This transition has profound implications for capability-building and learning.
