How Google Apps For Education Can Be Used In Your Classroom

How Google Apps For Education Can Be Used In Your Classroom | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Like Apple and Microsoft, Google also wants a place in your classroom.

Google Apps for Education is a free suite of cloud-based tools created by Google to use in your classroom. You probably knew that part, and likely have a vague awareness of what’s available (Google Drive, Google Form, etc.) But Sylvia Duckworth has gone a step further, giving you an extended metaphor (a train), a graphic (with color), and a brief description of each “stop” of the Google Apps for Education train.

(If we wanted to over-read into the metaphor, we could even wonder if she’s using the momentum of the train as a criticism of Google’s business practices and their “railroading” of smaller app developers, but we’re crazy and Sylvia isn’t, so…)

From virtual reality field trips to interactive carpets – reporting from the Google in Education Summit | Cloud

From virtual reality field trips to interactive carpets – reporting from the Google in Education Summit | Cloud | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
In June we hosted our first Google in Education Summit at the Jisc offices in London.

This event brought together colleges and universities that use Google Apps for Education and related products to discuss their experiences, and how they would like to see Google for Education products develop. Senior staff from Google were on hand to hear from institutions, and to present on recent developments in the Google for Education product suite. We also took the opportunity to do a little “future gazing” and imagine how a few of Google’s current R&D projects might translate into future products for teachers and learners.

Learning Technologies: It's a matter of policy....

Learning Technologies: It's a matter of policy.... | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Like another eight or so Institutions around the country, Sheffield has relatively recently become a full "customer” of Google Apps for Education (GAFE). After moving our student email service to Gmail in 2009, and then a phased transition of our staff email service about 12 months ago, we then enabled Calendar, Docs and Sites for all staff and students alike.

With its readily usable platform that enables collaborative working amongst our students, and apparent popularity, there’s lots to like about using Google Apps in learning and teaching. In the last year we’ve seen a few really exciting examples of innovative practice, and there’ll no doubt be more to come. But before we just wade in with wholesale promotion of using the Apps with our students, we need to think about some of the broader issues, starting with policy and guidelines. Here are some of the areas I’ve identified over the last few weeks that require such attention.

Create Multiple Chrome Profiles to Use Multiple Google Accounts

Create Multiple Chrome Profiles to Use Multiple Google Accounts | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
As more schools adopt Google Apps For Education (GAFE), increasingly teachers and students are dealing with multiple Google Accounts - one for work/school and one for personal use. When this situation happens, we often want to keep our two worlds separate.  Google has a way to make this possible that is built into Chrome.  Users can establish multiple Chrome profiles tied to specific Google accounts.  As the Director of Technology in my school district, I often see teachers attempt to solve this problem by adding a second account by selecting their profile picture in Gmail and choosing “add an account.”
