Create Animated GIFs in PowerPoint | Free Technology for Teachers

Years ago Common Craft made a fun little guide to understanding the World Cup. The guide featured a bunch of animated GIFs. It was a great example of using silent animations to explain a topic. In the years since then I've encouraged teachers to think about having students make animated GIFs to illustrate and explain concepts.

How To Use Animated GIFS In eLearning

GIF stands for Graphic Interface Format; basically, this means GIFs are image files that include a form of animation. When GIFs first began, they were very basic with only alternating frames; now GIFs have evolved to include more high-quality detailed animation.

GIFs are nothing new (they celebrated their 30th anniversary this year), but their use is more popular than ever. Learners experience GIFs on a daily basis from sites such as Buzzfeed, Reddit, Imgur, and other social media sites.

Using TallTweets to Create Gifs

Using TallTweets to Create Gifs  | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Polly-Alida Farrington writes: "Amit Agarwal of Digital Inspiration has created many handy tools and shares great tips on his blog.  His TallTweets tool was originally created to create very long twitter posts. Enter your text and TallTweets parses it out into a bunch of connected tweets and posts them for you. Now that Twitter has added that feature, TallTweets has been repurposed to create gifs from Google slide decks."

I love this! And Polly's ideas for uses have sparked some of my own. What about creating a gif of book covers to display on your whiteboard while students are coming into the library for class? Or as she suggests, sharing introductory information or keywords from the presentation you'll be doing? (This would be great if you were  presenting about the impact of libraries to your school board! Think of all the images you could include!) Have students make one for a 10 second book talk!

I'm sure you can come up with a variety of ways to use TallTweets immediately!

Interesting ideas! I can see tying this into a literature circle or exit ticket of some sort.

Interesting! Reminds me of the lesson I did years ago Tweeting a book review or Story in 140 -- guess I'll have to change that title, huh? LOL

The GIF(t) of Impact – The Ed Techie

The GIF(t) of Impact – The Ed Techie | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Back in 2017 I blogged how ALT had taken a different approach to developing strategy which had made the often dry, boring process more engaging and meaningful. Well, it’s now nearly 2020 and we’re developing a new strategy, so ALT have handily updated on what they achieved over the last strategy period. And as well as a nice report, we have GIFs! It may seem trivial, but I think being able to boil your outcomes down to some GIFs may be both a useful exercise in practising clarity of message, and also make them more social media friendly.

I recently came across an awesome tool that can take a Google Slideshow and save it as an animated GIF (thanks to Infinitely Teaching for the tip!) This free tool is called Tall Tweets (odd name, I know) and is created by the awesome Amit Agarwal.

Animated GIFs can be handy for quickly showing a process or sequence of events. Check out Common Craft's soccer guide for great examples of using animated GIFs to illustrate concepts.
