The rise of online learning in post-covid times has created a further need to look at the data privacy of users. Many had to learn to navigate online classes very quickly and school systems set up servers hastily in order to keep up with the sudden shift to fully virtual options. Recommended actions to increase user privacy include not publishing contact info or meeting links anywhere, giving parents the option to opt out of any sharing or to delete their child's information and anonymizing user names on the platform.

Alternatives to Google Products (Complete List)

Alternatives to Google Products (Complete List) | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

It’s been fun Google, but it’s time to say goodbye.

Have you noticed?

Google’s entire business model is based on you surrendering to their corporate surveillance. That’s it. All they do is repackage mass corporate surveillance into convenient, free, trendy applications that suck up all your data. Your private data helps Google dominate the online advertising market.

You are the product.

The other key issue to consider here is that Google is tracking and recording your activity in order to build a user profile, which can be used for various purposes.

Protect Your Data By Using Single Sign-On Whenever Possible

Protect Your Data By Using Single Sign-On Whenever Possible  | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
No company, be it a startup or a conglomerate, has a perfect security system. Chipotle’s payment system was hacked, OneLogin experienced a data breach, and even Google had a run in with a bad phishing exploit that left thousands of account compromised from a shared document. In other words, I’m wary about giving any info to companies that don’t have a track record of keeping it safe.

The General Data Protection Regulation in a nutshell

The General Data Protection Regulation in a nutshell | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

After more than three years of discussion the EU General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR framework has been finally agreed on. This directive will replace the current 1998 Data Protection Act. As with most major legislative change it will not be enforced immediately and will likely become compulsory at the first half of 2018. The main intent of the GDPR is to give individuals more control over their personal data, impose stricter rules to companies handling it and make sure companies embrace new technology to process the influx of data produced.

5 cybersecurity life skills to teach all year

5 cybersecurity life skills to teach all year | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

As the digital world evolves, cybersecurity life skills are more essential than ever—here are some major lessons to impart upon students

If a student from your school had someone knock on their front door, ask for personal information and offer to give them a treat in exchange for that information, what would happen? It depends on the child, but what you know for certain is that your district or school has been teaching stranger danger since that child was in kindergarten, so the odds are good that the interaction would raise a red flag for the student.

Protecting children’s digital bodies through rights

Protecting children’s digital bodies through rights | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The recent incident of a UNHCR official tweeting a photo of an Iraqi refugee girl holding a piece of paper with all her personal data, including family composition and location, is remarkable for two reasons. First, because of the stunning indifference and perhaps also ignorance displayed by a high-ranking UN communications official with respect to a child’s personal data. However, the more notable aspect of this incident has been the widespread condemnation of the tweet (since deleted) and its sender, and her explanation that it was “six years old”. While public criticism has focused on the power gap between humanitarians and refugees and the precarious situation of Iraqi refugees, this incident is noteworthy because it marks the descent of a new figure in international aid and global governance: that of children’s digital bodies.

Lessons from the Facebook Fiasco | Library Babel Fish | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
It was interesting to learn about a new product designed to personalize the library experience for public library patrons shortly after watching Mark Zuckerberg being grilled by members of Congress. Thanks to a Twitter thread posted by Becky Yoose, a systems librarian who works for a large public library, I now know OCLC, a global library cooperative based in the US, best known for its shared catalog WorldCat, has acquired Wise, a subsystem for what librarians call an “ILS” - an integrated library system that combines the catalog with library functions such as keeping track of who has checked out what. This new system will do much more – in a sense, cataloging library users and tying their interests to library materials and programs through marketing.

Digital Literacy and Information Fluency in Higher Ed

Digital Literacy and Information Fluency in Higher Ed | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Consuming information online is no more than a click, scroll, or swipe these days. All searches are not created equal and rarely do we think about fact checking what we find on the Internet. I am not alone in thinking about how “…the Internet is actually changing the way we read the way we reason, and even the way we think, and all for the worse” (The Death of Expertise, Nicols, 2017, p. 111). In higher education, I think it is imperative we teach our learners and colleagues about what it means to participate and interact in digital spaces and places. How can our institutions help students, staff, and faculty “be” online and consider how both information and digital environments impact knowledge sharing and learning?
