Four types of student posts in introductory online discussion activities – Matt Cornock

Four types of student posts in introductory online discussion activities – Matt Cornock | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
In introductory or ice-breaker activities, there are four types of posts that are made by students/participants on discussion boards or community blogs. These four types I have drawn up after looking at a selection of ‘Welcome Sites’ for new students. These Welcome Sites are used for new students to make contact with each other and the Department before they arrive at University. In these sites there is a blog in which students are instructed to make a ‘hello’ post which will be replied to by second year student facilitators or staff. The Blog tool is best suited for Blackboard, but in Moodle you would use a Forum discussion board.

A Learning Analytics Methodology for Detecting Sentiment in Student Fora: A Case Study in Distance Education - EURODL

A Learning Analytics Methodology for Detecting Sentiment in Student Fora: A Case Study in Distance Education - EURODL | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Online fora have become not only one of the most popular communication tools in e-learning environments, but also one of the key factors of the learning process, especially in distance learning, as they can provide to the students involved, motivation for collaboration in order to achieve a common goal. The purpose of this study is to analyse data related to the participation of postgraduate students in the online forum of their course at the Hellenic Open University. The content of the messages posted is analysed by using text mining techniques, while the network through which the students interact is processed through social network analysis techniques. Furthermore, sentiment analysis and opinion mining is applied on the same dataset. Our aim is to study students’ attitude towards the course and its features, as well as to model their sentiment behaviour over time, and finally to detect if and how this affected their overall performance. The combined knowledge attained from the aforementioned techniques can provide tutors with practical and valuable information for the structure and the content of the students’ exchanged messages, the patterns of interaction among them, the trend of sentiment polarity during the course, so as to improve the educational process.

Online Discussion Forums as Assessment Tools - Faculty Focus | Higher Ed Teaching & Learning

Online Discussion Forums as Assessment Tools - Faculty Focus | Higher Ed Teaching & Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Classroom Assessment Techniques, or CATs, are simple ways to evaluate students’ understanding of key concepts before they get to the weekly, unit, or other summative-type assessment (Angelo & Cross, 1993). CATs were first made popular in the face-to-face teaching environment by Angelo and Cross as a way to allow teachers to better understand what their students were learning and how improvements might be made in real time during the course of instruction. But the same principle can apply to online teaching as well.

The Art and Science of Successful Online Discussions

The Art and Science of Successful Online Discussions | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Faculty use asynchronous discussions to extend and enhance instructional practices in the online classroom. It is widely reported that online discussions play an integral role in facilitating students’ learning, as well as fostering dialogue, critical thinking, and reflective inquiry (Kayler & Weller, 2007; Morris, Finnegan, & Sz-Shyan, 2005). Despite faculty’s knowledge that discussion forums can serve as a useful learning tool, online discussions are not easy to establish and manage.

Remind101 Blog

For years, teaching technology concepts has been a process that required a device in order to teach. Students learned about computers in computer class. Computer class was a stand alone course that rarely integrated with the content area subjects beyond research and word processing. However, times have changed. Digital competencies are threaded throughout the fabric of K-12, higher education, and the global economy. It’s imperative that schools begin to integrate digital literacy throughout the K-12 curriculum and across all content areas.

However, teaching digital literacy does not require devices at all. In fact, there are so many ways to learn digital skills offline.
