A conversation within UK universities is in order to address the lack of representation of black professors. Nathan Richards discusses his new film which explores the intellectual deficit within academia and how the marginalization of certain groups negatively impacts the university’s role within society. Wider inclusion of experiences in academia will offer frameworks of enquiry that can be utilised to more effectively engage with students and local communities.

At its new Waterside Campus the University of Northampton is doing away with lecture theatres in favour of more flexible ‘teaching spaces’.

It’s the latest evidence of the university’s developing approach to using digital technology to enhance teaching and learning. Already, Northampton has redesigned two-thirds of its courses to support its ‘active blended learning’ approach and the new teaching spaces are part of a strategy to give students best value from face-to-face time with teachers.

Landmark report on the last decade of UK postgraduate education provides an indication of what is to come after Covid-19 | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The Higher Education Policy Institute (www.hepi.ac.uk) is publishing a landmark report, Postgraduate Education in the UK (HEPI Analytical Report 1) by Dr Ginevra House, which has been produced with the kind support of the British Library.

Looking at how the UK postgraduate landscape has changed since the last similar report was published a decade ago, the new report uses previously unpublished data to reveal the state of UK postgraduate education in the years before the Covid-19 crisis struck. National learning analytics service seeks to boost student attainment and cut drop outs

The world’s first national learning analytics service has been launched for the UK’s further and higher education sectors.

It has the potential to transform students’ learning experience, support their wellbeing and boost achievement.

The technology, which has been developed by Jisc, uses real time and existing data to track student performance and activities.

From libraries to laboratories, learning analytics can monitor where, when and how students learn. This means that both students and their university or college can ensure they are making the most of their learning experience.

Students themselves have access to the Study Goal app to track how they use their time, from revision to relaxation, to help them take full ownership of their personal learning and study strategies.

Accessible VLEs - making the most of the new regulations | All-Party Parliamentary Group for Assistive Technology

Accessible VLEs - making the most of the new regulations | All-Party Parliamentary Group for Assistive Technology | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The report has been produced in advance of the new digital accessibility regulations becoming law in September 2018, to help the Government and FE/HE providers put in place the necessary guidance and practical provisions to turn the regulations into reality.

The new regulations, in improving equal access to higher and further education, can – if implemented well - make an important contribution to meeting the Government’s ambition to create a more prosperous and equal Britain by growing our domestic talent pool and closing the disability employment and attainment gaps. The report’s recommendations are aimed at doing much more than simply achieving compliance with the regulations.

Does higher education have a retention problem? | Wonkhe

Does higher education have a retention problem? | Wonkhe | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
When asking if UK higher education has a ‘retention problem’, the obvious place to start is the known data on lower retention rates for certain groups of students, particularly mature, black and minority ethnic and students from poorer socio-economic backgrounds.

We’ll get to that later on, but it strikes me that there’s new retention problem on the horizon. Will all this worsen as a result of dropout rates being a core metric in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF)?
