Free Internet based paraphrasing tools: further threats to academic integrity - BioMed Central blog

Free Internet based paraphrasing tools: further threats to academic integrity - BioMed Central blog | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Paraphrasing tools or article ‘spinners’ are free Internet sites which use computer programs to change writing so it looks different to the original text. While it may look different to the source material, using the output from an online tool can be considered a form of plagiarism or cheating as it is not an individual’s work but the work of a machine. This study, published in the International Journal for Educational Integrity, shows that the machine outputs are of poor quality, cannot be trusted and there are ways of detecting their use.

Increasing Skills in Instruction and Information Literacy | SLA NY: The New York Chapter

Increasing Skills in Instruction and Information Literacy | SLA NY: The New York Chapter | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

As a Reference Associate in Business and Government documents at New York University’s Bobst Library, one of my responsibilities includes teaching classes on navigating the library homepage, catalog, databases, and bibliographic tools, such as Refworks. I wanted to increase my teaching skills, therefore I decided to take Instruction and Information Literacy with Professor Clay Willams, who has over 20 years experience in Information Literacy and is currently Deputy Chief Librarian at Hunter College Libraries. Over the semester, I have developed my own teaching philosophy, learned how to assess my audience, examined several teaching theories, and researched numerous library literacy topics.

#Take5: 18: The best way to tackle plagiarism?

#Take5: 18: The best way to tackle plagiarism? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
In our cut and paste culture, even if it is not actually the case, it sometimes seems that we are being overwhelmed by a plague of plagiarism, not just in academia but in all walks of life (e.g. Scroth, 2012). The current popularity of tools like Turnitin in higher education suggests that what started out as a solution in search of a problem may have opened a Pandora’s box in which our notions of academic honesty and integrity are called into question by the behaviour of our students. In fact, the ubiquity of electronic counter-measures have given rise to counter-counter-measures (e.g. Rogerson & McCarthy, 2017) which make marking essays more of an exercise in forensic science rather than an educational process.

A guide to reading research papers

A guide to reading research papers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

It can be hard to make sense of an education research paper and there are certainly those who think teachers shouldn’t worry their pretty little heads about them. Yet if we intend to claim our profession back from quixotic consultants then it’s something that more of us need to do.

There are plenty of dense papers written that aim to show that the curriculum is neoliberal or that tests are phallic. There are also many studies that seek to find correlations. I’m not going to discuss these here. Instead, I am going to look at experimental research.
