Interactive Learning Content In eLearning: How Effective Is It?

Interactive Learning Content In eLearning: How Effective Is It? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Before going ahead to the main topic of today, which is the effect of interactive learning content on eLearning, let me start by talking about what the term "interaction" really means.

When students apply their knowledge in a practical way, interactive learning occurs. Although interactive learning may look different depending on how it is used, this type of pedagogy promotes creativity, focus and provides immediate feedback.
1. The think, pair and share technique is one of the most well-known interactive learning methods. This technique is versatile and can be used in many ways. A teacher will ask students to think about a question or task. Then they each share their thoughts with a partner, before the group shares. Students can share their thoughts with peers in a non-intimidating manner. However, they are not forced to respond to a whole room of students.
2. Take a side This activity is great for discussing controversial topics in my classroom. This activity is also useful for anticipatory activities when you start a new unit. Students are asked to make a statement and then they line up in groups on the opposite sides of the room according to their opinions. This activity can be expanded by adding more statements to influence opinion. You could also allow your children to debate each other. It will get your students moving and allow them to hear the ideas and opinions of their peers.
 3. Interactive Notebooks This is a great way for students to learn how to be more present in their note-taking. An interactive notebook requires students to pay attention to every step. You can make templates on your own time if you are a teacher in the higher grades. However, I have seen students as young as 10 and 11 years old really enjoy this "arts & crafts" portion of classes. Interactive notebooks can be used in all subjects, including math, English and science. There is a plethora of information and free templates on the internet, ready for you to use for interactive learning. (https://www.joyusing.com/Document-Camera.html)
 4. Online Collaboration Teachers have so many options online to get their students engaged and working together. Google Docs/Slides are a popular tool for students to collaborate on projects. But there are many other tools that you can use, and they are all free! Joyusing(www.joyusing.com) allows students to create videos for class projects. You can enhance what you do in the classroom by researching other media that your students can use to promote interactive learning.
5. My number one piece of advice regarding assessment is to allow your students to choose. Instead of assigning them an essay, offer them the possibility of creating a poster or creating slideshows, giving a speech, and writing that essay. While you can still assign a writing component to the easier options, it allows students to choose what they are best at. While some students prefer structure and being told what to do, others like more freedom and the ability to think for themselves.

With more choice in how they tackle an assignment, students may be more involved, excited and motivated — and a broader spectrum of abilities are accounted for.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) shouldn't be reserved just for online courses. We should be employing UDL principles in the development of all instructional resources.

Essential Elements Οf Interactive Learning

Essential Elements Οf Interactive Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

What is the biggest challenge that educators and trainers in various capacities face today? Undoubtedly, it is dealing with the constantly dropping learner attention spans and engaging them through the learning session. Online learning bears the most brunt of this issue since there is no human touch involved, and you can’t even see the learners’ reaction in-person. So what can you do to address this issue? Well, interactivity could be one of your best bets to ease this problem.

Why do so many Moodle courses suck?

Why do so many Moodle courses suck? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Moodle is a magnificent free product and has the potential to enable schools and teachers to build wonderfully unique interactive online learning courses in which learner interaction can be tracked, measured and responded to. Despite this the vast majority of Moodle courses I see are a long list of Word and PDF documents with at best a few forums that enable a minimum of human social interaction.

Ruby Rennie Panter's curator insight, August 1, 2014 5:16 AM

Nik gives some very useful insights and some practical ideas for developing online materials. He has a focus on Moodle, but the ideas relate to any online learning platform.

Donna Farren's curator insight, August 1, 2014 8:16 AM

Nik makes some great points about Moodle - or really putting any content online - there has to be instructional design training, online teaching training or blended teaching training and how to select content for online delivery.  technical training alone is not enough.

Mikko Hakala's curator insight, August 7, 2014 5:40 PM

Problems and possibilities of Moodle (and other similar platforms) outlined by Nik Peachey:

* Why Moodle courses often suck?

Not so intuitive platform to work with, lack of teacher training and skills to create online learning material (I agree with these points), excess security issues.

* What to do to improve.

* Comment about ready-made courses.

There are various problems, for example these often contain little student-teacher or peer interaction. I agree that the ready-made digital material, in my experience, is not very personalisable (and therefore difficult to teach in an inspired way).

* How to develop your Moodle skills?

The post gives 9 links to practical video tutorials (how to create a quiz, add a youtube, etc.). There are also free Moodle platforms to practice.

One other product I have been getting excited about is Verso. This platform is not quite a learning management system, and has built in interactivity. I like it because it is crazy easy to use. It is sort of the anti-LMS way to have students engage with your content.

This app has been a plaything of mine for the last couple of weeks, and I am going to play over the holidays to see how it works. It is very easy to use: upload a video, write some notes/activities and there is the lesson. Seems a simple way to make flipped content for those starting to flip.

Flipped Classroom: Advantages and Challenges

Flipped Classroom: Advantages and Challenges | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The flipped classroom originated in Colorado when two Chemistry teachers, Jon Bergmann and Aaron Sams, started recording lectures for students to watch at home. They were driven to increase interaction with students when they seem to need it most, during homework. So, they flipped the traditional classroom structure; students watched the lecture at home and then completed homework under the guidance of their teacher during class. Bergmann and Sams reported increased assessment scores in the first year of its implementation1, and the model quickly became popular.

Interactive Learning Materials For Engagement

Interactive Learning Materials For Engagement | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

We are going to be discussing many aspects of interactive learning materials, so we might as well agree on a common working definition. Since the start of eLearning, many things have happened and many more will for sure. For those committed to the learning and engagement of their learners, the idea of an interactive material should by now be well beyond having a place where you can see some images and click next. When we talk about interactive learning materials, it means that the learner is not passively going through and trying to sip in the contents but it means that they have to solve problems, make decisions, look for pieces of information, test assumptions and take risks.
