As Claire Gray scans her customers’ shopping at the checkout in Waitrose in Wells, Somerset, she is imagining her future as a lawyer. In October, Gray, 46, will start juggling a part-time law degree at the Open University alongside her supermarket job. “I’m a bit nervous about studying,” she admits

Until recently, we thought of learning, working, and living as separate parts of our lives. In our younger years we went to school. We spent our adult years working, and wove in personal events into the time that remained. Now imagine a world where all of this has changed. In the not so distant future, working, learning, and living will become increasingly inseparable, not by choice, but in order to thrive in a rapidly evolving learning economy.

The need to develop new ways of learning has become a live issue, largely linked with the demand for increased flexibility of pace, place and mode of delivery. Increasing student fees, with the result that many more students may choose to work their way through HE, means that the sector needs to identify pedagogies that are going to empower student learning, offering increased choice, and above all, facilitate high quality provision.
