Apple rains on the AI hype cycle | by Derek Robertson | Digital Future Daily | POLITICO.com

Apple unveiled its long-awaited “Apple Intelligence” suite of AI tools yesterday, but it didn’t garner quite the level of excitement to which the hardware giant is accustomed.

Usually when Apple makes a big announcement about a world-shaping new technology, it comes with the fanfare (and price tag) befitting the company that gave the world the Macintosh and the iPhone.

The “Apple Intelligence” platform is a bit more low-key, with Apple announcing some improvements to its already AI-powered Siri voice assistant, AI-generated custom emojis and the integration of ChatGPT into iPhone software.

Those features aren’t nothing.

FCC wants change of US court hearing challenges to net neutrality rules | by David Shepardson | NextTV.com | Surfing the Broadband Bit Stream | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The Federal Communications Commission on Friday asked the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, Ohio to transfer a series of industry legal challenges to its decision to reinstate landmark net neutrality rules to a federal court in Washington. Net neutrality rules require internet service providers (ISPs) to treat internet data and users equally rather than restricting access, slowing speeds or blocking content for certain users. The rules also forbid special arrangements in which ISPs give improved network speeds or access to favored users.

Understanding uptake in demand-side broadband subsidy programs: The affordable connectivity program case | by John B. Horrigan, Brian E. Whitacre &, Hernan Galperin | EverScience.com

Highlights

  • We provide background on the ACP, a recent program that subsidizes broadband service for low-income U.S. households.

  • We estimate ACP enrollment using both ordinary least squares (OLS) and geographically weighted regression (GWR).

  • OLS results show that economic distress and local library presence are strongly positively associated with ACP enrollment.

  • Higher rates of foreign-born or elderly residents are negatively associated with ACP enrollment.

  • GWR results show that relationships between ACP enrollment and local characteristics vary widely and are context-specific.

April's cyberattack on internet service provider Frontier Communications enabled hackers to steal Social Security numbers for 750,000 users.

In a data breach notice sent to Maine’s attorney general, the ISP says the incident affected 751,895 people. The company is preparing to send out data breach notifications to affected consumers as the hacking group allegedly responsible preps to sell the stolen information.

The group, known as RansomHub, claims it stole 5GB of Frontier data that also includes email addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, and physical addresses of 2 million customers.

FCC Maps versus Broadband Labels | by Doug Dawson | POTs & PANs | Surfing the Broadband Bit Stream | Scoop.it
I have been complaining for years about the FCC mapping rule that allow ISPs to claim marketing speeds instead of something closer to actual speeds. That allows ISPs to report speeds that benefit them in some manner rather than being truthful to the public. There have been big consequences as a result of this FCC…

An Nvidia pile-on could change AI | by Christine Mui with help from Derek Robertson | POLITICO.com

Nvidia’s near-total dominance over the market for artificial intelligence chips is head-turning — so much so, it’s now set to be the subject of a Department of Justice investigation for potential anticompetitive conduct.

The company is estimated to have captured as much as 90 percent of the market for high-end AI chips. Its stock is responsible for a third of the S&P 500’s gains this year. CEO Jensen Huang is being mobbed by fans to the point where the celebrity treatment has a name: “Jensanity.” Its graphics processing units, or GPUs, which have become the go-to chips for AI, are so highly sought after that startups resort to extreme lengths to access their computing power. Even the idea of taking some of Nvidia’s premier chips away from a company can invoke a scandal.

It’s a remarkable illustration of how a single company can shape an entire ecosystem. And the way Nvidia’s competitors — and regulators — are reacting might shake it all up again.
