Many dictionaries are presented as learner’s dictionaries. Then there are text books of English grammar, which deal with parts of speech, parsing and analysis. The European Union (EU) has brought out its own English style guide for authors and translators. The writing is clear, concise and direct. Here is a sample entry: “Words in -ise/-ize. Use -ise. Both spellings are correct in British English, but the -ise form is now much more common in the media.” The opening chapter deals with spellings and its last section with the use of the hyphen. Hyphens do not seem to enjoy much popularity today. Churchill said the hyphen is a blemish to be avoided wherever possible. Woodrow Wilson said it is the most un-American thing in the world. A major Oxford dictionary is reported to have removed the hyphen from 16000 words resulting in forms such as fig leaf, test tube, crybaby, logjam and pigeonhole. The opening chapter of the style guide deals with spellings and its last section with the use of the hyphen. My name is György Chityil, you can find me on Linkedin and Facebook. As you can tell by my name I am not from an Anglo-Saxon country and English is not my mother tongue, still I was always fascinated by this language and also completed my university studies in the United States, hence I achieved an excellent grasp of the language. Why misspelled names are so common & what journalists are doing to prevent them | Poynter.Warren Buffett, Michele Bachmann and Elliott Gould all have something in common: they know what it’s like to have journalists repeatedly misspell their names. News organizations frequently run corrections for misspelled names, and some have misspelled the same name dozens of times. Last week, the Los Angeles Times ran a correction after misspelling Gould’s name in a caption. That was the 47th time since 1985 that the Times has referred to the actor as “Elliot” instead of “Elliott.” The the impotence of proofreading your writtingBlog post at How To Write Better : Many thanks to my good friend Angela Boothroyd for sharing this hilarious video with us. Once you’ve seen it you’ll never trust your spell checker again. Ever. As I often say, the lunacy of the English language is far too illogical for an electronic system to cope with, no matter how sophisticated its design. Spelling and spell checkTwo things I’ve observed: • Good spellers like spelling tests. • Bad spellers dislike spelling tests. A few weeks ago, the University of North Carolina sparked an Internet brouhaha by announcing that it’s doing away with a spelling test long required of its journalism graduates. The decision was made because journalists write on computers, and computers have spell check. Two more things I’ve observed: • Good spellers use spell check. • Bad spellers don’t use spell check. Google Docs Getting Google Search Spell CheckGoogle Search has a pretty impressive spell check in place that lets you know if you’ve spelled a word wrong and gives you suggestions as to what word you might have been wanting to spell. Turns out the guys that run Google Docs thought this was pretty cool too as they’re bringing it to Docs. Yew Jin Lim, a software engineer with Google, penned a piece today on the Docs Blog about his team bringing search spell check to Google Docs. The key advantage here is that the spell check in Google Docs will no longer rely on a dictionary for the words you spell. Like Google Search, Docs spell check will now adapt with the Web. |
