THE FUTURES OF LEARNING 3: WHAT KIND OF PEDAGOGIES FOR THE 21st CENTURY? Cynthia Luna Scot

Dr Peter Carey's insight:
ABSTRACT
Since the emergence of a global movement that calls for a new model of learning for the twenty- first century, it has been argued that formal education must be transformed to enable new forms of learning that are needed to tackle complex global challenges. Literature on this topic offers compelling arguments for transforming pedagogy to better support acquisition of twenty-first century skills. However, the question of how best to teach these skills is largely overlooked. Experts recognize that the ‘transmission’ or lecture model is highly ineffective for teaching twenty-first century competencies and skills, yet widespread use of this model continues. In spite of worldwide agreement that learners need skills such as critical thinking and the ability to communicate effectively, innovate, and solve problems through negotiation and collaboration, pedagogy has seldom adapted to address these challenges. Rethinking pedagogy for the twenty-first century is as crucial as identifying the new competencies that today’s learners need to develop. This paper, the third and last in a series on the Futures of Learning , explores pedagogies and learning environments that may contribute to the development and mastery of twenty-first century competencies and skills, and advance the quality of learning.

The Future of Schooling OECD Report

We are facing unprecedented ch allenges – social, economic and environmental – driven by accelerating globalisation and a faster rate of technological developments. At the same time, those forces are providing us with myriad new opportunities for human advancement. The future is uncerta in and we cannot predict it; but we need to be open and ready for it . The children entering education in 2018 will be young adults in 2030. Schools can prepare them for jobs that have not yet been created, for technologies that have not yet been invented, to solve problems that have not yet been anticipated . It will be a shared responsibility to seiz e opportunities and find solutions . To navigate through such uncertainty, students will need to develop curiosity, imagination , resilience and self - regulation ; they will need to respect and appreciate the ideas, perspectives and values of others ; and they will need to cope with failure and rejection, and to move forward in the face of adversity . The ir motivation will be more than getting a good job and a high income ; they will also need to care about the well -being of their friends and families, their communities and the planet. Education can equip learners with agency and a sense of purpose , and the competencies they need , to shape their own lives and contribu te to the lives of others . To find out how best to do so, the Organisation for Economic Co -operation and Development (OECD) has launched T he Future of Education and Skills 2030 project . The aim of the project is to help countries find answers to two far -reaching question s: ● What knowledge, skills, attitudes and values w ill today's students need to thrive and shape the ir world? ● How can instructional systems develop these knowledge, skills, attitudes and values effectively? This position paper describes the first results from this work . The initial framework was reviewed, tested and validated in an iterative process involving a range of stakeholders from around the world. They ensured that the framework is relevant across the globe, consistent with wider policies and can be implemented . We will finalise the framework by the end of 2018. In 2019, we will change gear s and begin to explore the translation of the framework into pedagogy , assessment and the design of an instructional sys tem . Working with policy makers , academic experts, school networks, teachers, education leaders, students and social partners, the framework provides a space in which to exchange ideas, compare proven and promising practices , discover cutting - edge research and contribute to a new ecosystem of learning . If you ’d like to join us, p lease get in touch.

What is “school” in the future? We gaze forward to 2025 and imagine Mariam, aged 10, in West Africa. Her school is a visor and a touch-response glove that let her enter virtual worlds to play and learn her way. For Aarav, age 15, in South Asia, school is a training center built by employers where he prepares for work. For Luiza, age 9, in Amazonia, school is a classroom occupied with rigorous core learning under a new international millennium goal for basic literacy and numeracy.
