I spend a lot of time thinking about Makerspaces.
These engaging spaces that bring creativity, tinkering, and exploration to our communities make me push the possibilities and potential of what these spaces and experiences can bring to our young people.
For me it is fun to think about all of the different elements we can add to our Makerspaces.
There can be duck tape, 3D printers, art supplies, recycled goods, old computer parts, wood, Makey Makey kits, Sphero’s, knitting needles and yarn, LEGO’s, playdough, wood, hot glue guns, fabric, paper, wire, and the list goes on and on.
Now think about this.

Even though they’ve been around since 2013, school library makerspaces still have a lot of misunderstandings surrounding them. This confusion can come from administrators, teachers, students and the librarians themselves. Unfortunately, believing these myths can often cause decisions to be made about libraries that are detrimental to the learning process. Today, I’m here to try to clear up a few of these myths.

Welcome to the exciting world of teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to your own kids or for charitable work. Kids are naturally curious about how things work, and with a new trend in hardware companies creating open source hardware products, it's a great time to teach kids about electronics. But modern technology can seem too complex to even begin to understand. So where do you start?
About the Robot: This robot will run on tile, wood, laminate, low cut carpet, or other smooth surfaces. As it is designed, it will not work on extremely rough surfaces such as concrete, shag or tall carpet, grass, and such. The rough cost of this robot should be less than $10. On average, about $5~7 dollars if you look. You can find the majority of these parts on Amazon, salvage from Goodwill, garage sales, or other places.. Launched on IndieGogo a few months ago after 2+ years in development, Crowbits is a STEM education project that leverages both the Arduino and ESP32 boards, in addition to the BBC Micro:bit, to teach logical thinking and programming. Featuring Lego-blocks compatibility and a Scratch-like interface, the project has reached its IndieGogo backing goal and is ready to ship, says Crowbits' maker Elecrow.
Crowbits are little plug-and-play blocks that can snap together thanks to their magnetic Pogo pins, which makes it easy to connect crowbits with one another. Elecrow has already built 40+ different crowbits, including a DC motor, a buzzer, a LED, a gesture sensor, and many more. In addition to input and ouput modules, you also have programmable micro-controllers and IIC/UART modules. With the current pandemic in the world, the situation seems pretty scary. The Corona virus might be anywhere. As far as we know, one might carry the virus for a few days without even showing any symptoms. Scary indeed.
But hey, don't get too scared. There are some easy ways we can fight against this virus. One is to wash our hands, properly. Our hands are the main carrier of all sorts of germs. We frequently touch our eyes, nose, and mouth without even noticing it. Germs from unwashed hands might get into our food as well, some of which may even grow in the food and when we eat those, they can make us seriously sick. And washing hands with soap can mostly kill them. Makerspaces that are impactful are not a new idea, in fact, I have written before about this Maker Care program, created by Islip, NY Library Media Specialist, Gina Seymour. Over the past year, I also have discovered the work of Steve Sostak and Aaron Moniz, of Inspire Citizens who through their Empathy to Impact approach, help infuse the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, global competence frameworks, and media literacy into project-based inquiry, design thinking, curricular standards, language objectives, and 21st-century learning. With their work in mind, I launched a makerspace initiative in Nigeria, Making the SDGs, in partnership with my friend and colleague, Jacob Sule, which aims to empower and support students/youths in rural Nigeria to help to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, through a network of makerspaces.

Writing a post like this isn’t easy. I feel like I know in my heart what my philosophy on makerspaces is, but putting it into tangible statements seems harder. So I started thinking about this more as a manifesto – if I was to make a grand statement about what I feel the value of makerspaces in schools are, what would it be? To me, what are the most important values of makerspaces?

Wer ist ein Maker?
Basteln Sie noch? Oder sind Sie schon ein Maker? Noch nie davon gehört? Dann klären wir Sie auf: Maker sind Menschen, die Do-it-yourself auf ihre ganz eigene Art interpretieren. Zum Beispiel, indem sie aktuelle Technik kreativ an anderen als den ursprünglich gedachten Orten einsetzen oder künstlerisch aktiv werden. Die Maker-Szene ist mittlerweile so gross, dass sie alle zwei Monate ihre Anhänger mit dem Magazin «Make» über die neusten Erfindungen informiert – und so breit, dass alle, die handwerklich kreativ sind, in diesem Universum einen Platz finden. Damit werden Tätigkeiten aufgewertet, die jahrzehntelang etwas belächelt wurden: die Bastel- und Handarbeiten. Das Szeneblatt der Maker, «Make», beschreibt sogar, wie man einen QR Code stickt. Cool!
Kreativ sein ist erlaubt
Und Balsam für die Seelen von unzähligen Ex-Schülern, die in der Schule einen Klumpen Lehm in einen Kerzenständer verwandeln mussten, der dann jahrelang bei Oma im Bücherregal verstaubte. Ein Lichtblick für alle, die sich so kurz vor Weihnachten haareraufend fragen, was um alles in der Welt sie ihren Liebsten schenken sollen. Also: Warum nicht einmal etwas Selbstgebasteltes? Denn so leicht wie im Moment wurde es einem noch nie gemacht, selber kreativ zu werden: Das Internet versorgt grosszügig mit Ideen und praktischen Anleitungen in Form von Blogs, Foren und spezialisierten Websites. So gut, dass sich der Frust über ein mögliches Misslingen sicher in Grenzen halten wird.
Eigentlich ist es nicht erstaunlich, dass kreativ werden und schöpferisch tätig sein auf so wundersame Weise wieder ihren Platz erobert haben. Wer den ganzen Tag im Büro sitzt, ist froh, wenn er einmal etwas mit den Händen machen kann. Das hat man in den USA schon länger erkannt, dort geniesst «Art and Craft» einen Ruf als ernsthaftes Hobby mit hohem kunsthandwerklichem Anspruch.

It is often the case that you don't have all the components required to build a circuit that is developing in your mind. Or, perhaps the circuit you wish to develop uses dangerously high voltages and currents. In such cases, it makes sense to use a simulator to test the idea in safety. Simulators are now commonly available, with the Tinkercad Circuits platform covered here accessible in your web browser. As well as simulating circuits, it can also execute Arduino code, as we show here. Circuit simulation made simple!
