How to be truly happy at work, by Chris Gaborit

How to be truly happy at work, by Chris Gaborit | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

There have been many letdowns in my life and valleys along the way. I was promised promotions from managers that never eventuated, pay raises that I never saw, and opportunities that never came.

Today, however, I am so happy and where I wanted to be. I am financially blessed and in love with life. However, life was not always so happy. What are the keys to reaching your goals and being where you want to be?

1. Commit to give 100% in all you do.

From the first time in Grade 1 when teams and captains were chosen at school, I wanted to be the captain. I have always wanted to be financially successful and be a leader. Maybe it is because we were so poor as a family that I had to ride my old bike every morning to the bakery to buy 20 cents worth of 2-day-old chook (chicken) bread, which we ended up eating, or maybe because we could not afford real milk or butter.

How To Trick Your Brain To Hold On To Positive Habit Changes

How To Trick Your Brain To Hold On To Positive Habit Changes | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Nearly half of our everyday behaviors tend to be repeated in the same location almost every day, according to research out of Duke University. That means most of the time we are running on autopilot.

On average, a habit takes more like 66 days to form, with more intensive habits like doing 50 sit-ups every morning taking around 84 days to form, according to research out of University College of London that Dean references in his book. But these figures will often vary greatly from person to person.

Forming habits that stick isn't about finding a magic number. It's about being aware of your behaviors and environment and their effects on your brain. Here are some steps to get started:

Why Great Leaders Are Made, Not Born

Why Great Leaders Are Made, Not Born | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Friedman profiles luminaries including Michelle Obama, Bruce Springsteen, and Sheryl Sandberg in his book and shows how they gradually became leaders. He shows the skills they exercised and how they integrate different parts of their life together.

Friedman says he chose subjects who possess what he calls the three principles of total leadership: "Being real, acting with authenticity and knowing your values and vision; being whole, respecting the whole person and knowing there are different parts of your work, community, and personal lives that affect each other; and being innovative, constantly learning and experimenting in new ways to get things done."

The debate over whether great leaders are made, or born, has gone on for ages. Stewart Friedman, the founding director of the Wharton Work/Life Integration Project, says he has the definitive answer.
