I really enjoyed the comparison between dessert and the main course. PBL is the main course because it provides a framework for the students learning. While the dessert is simply doing a project because it fun and engaging for a short time.

Combining Inquiry and PBL: 3 Guidelines for Success

Combining Inquiry and PBL: 3 Guidelines for Success | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Engaging in inquiry does not mean logging hours in the library or on the computer searching for information. Especially with elementary students, inquiry happens in a variety of settings and experiences. As John Larmer, Editor in Chief of the Buck Institute, points out: “Students can find answers to their questions from many sources, including readings, but also experts, experiments, and field work.”

Learning Should Be Epic

When students hear a lecture or read from a textbook, more often than not that information is stored in the limbic system, the short-term memory part of the brain, and discarded after the test. Which raises an important question: What’s the point?

But when students are immersed in a story, one where they are the characters and teachers are their guides, a transformation takes place. The classroom becomes a setting. Conflict becomes authentic. And school becomes engaging.

And that is something students will not forget.

What is Project Based Learning?

What is Project Based Learning? | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

In Project Based Learning, teachers make learning come alive for students. Students work on a project over an extended period of time – from a week up to a semester – that engages them in solving a real-world problem or answering a complex question. They demonstrate their knowledge and skills by creating a public product or presentation for a real audience.

As a result, students develop deep content knowledge as well as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication skills. Project Based Learning unleashes a contagious, creative energy among students and teachers.
