EmergingEdTech has been running a Try-a-Tool-a-Week Challenge and this week Screencast-O-Matic is the tool of the week. If you have not used this tool and are interested in doing screencasting (also known as screen capture) take the time to review this video. The free version allows you to record up to 15 minutes, but you cannot edit the film. There is a paid version for $15 per year, which allows for editing and unlimited length! Screencast-O-Matic may be used as a web app, or you can download it (PC and Mac).

Have you used Blabberize in your classroom? It is a free tool that allows you to upload an image and then create a talking picture. This post provides may suggestions on how to use it across disciplines as well as a video playlist that will showcase many examples of student work. Below are a few ideas. * Research a historical figure and use Blabberize to have them talk about their lives. * Find a favorite quote from a fictional character and have the character say the quote (and explain it if necessary). * Think about science and how you could use a talking image to explain an experiment, a change of phase, etc. * Research an animal and have the animal talk about their habitat, what they eat, etc. There are many ideas in this post and I suspect you can come up with more. Students need to able to create their own image (or find one that copyright free) and upload the image. It would be best if they wrote out what the image would say and practice it prior to recording using a computer. The post also discusses how students could collaborate on projects, and notes that if you cannot record with a computer you can record using a phone. Find more information as well as a link to a video tutorial in the post.

Buncee is a new tool that allows you (or your students) to create presentations...think of it is a digital canvas. There is a free version and it allows you to create a 2 slide presentation. Movenote is a cross platform app that allows you to combine presentations with speech. Working with Google apps, Android, iPads and more you can upload images, video, and documents and create a presentation where you also record your voice. This post includes a short video that explains the program and interviews with a number of teachers whom use this in their classrooms with students. |
