Stephen's Web ~ An Alternative to the Engineering Model of Personalized Learning

Stephen's Web ~ An Alternative to the Engineering Model of Personalized Learning | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Larry Berger "is exactly right that there is a fundamental problem with the assumptions behind what he calls the engineering model of personalized learning," writes Phil Hill. Berger argues that he "spent a decade believing in this model—the map, the measure, and the library, all powered by big data algorithms" but that ""the map doesn't exist, the measurement is impossible, and we have, collectively, built only 5% of the library." Hill reiterates his minority and irrelevant definition of 'personalized learning' as "teaching practices that are intended to help reach students in the metaphorical back row" but beyond that doesn't say more about Berger's commentary. And Berger's commentary is important, and importantly right.

Blended and personalized learning holds tremendous promise for meeting the individual needs of our students and deepening their learning.

Unfortunately, in the rush to implement these models, we often overlook the needs of those responsible for putting them into practice: the teachers.

6 Changes Toward Personalized Learning

Say personalized learning to most people and it conjures up classrooms where every child is doing their own thing and the teacher is furiously trying to maintain order and overview in an otherwise rule-free classroom.

Great ideas:

  • Change how students sit: Do they have to sit in a certain spot?
  • Change how they work: Let students create their assignment results in many different ways
  • Change the knowledge they acquire:  Change the ways you present your lesson/activities
  • Change how you present your lessons: Don't present it in just the way you like to do it
  • Change the timeline: Do students really need to get it done in the same amount of time?
  • Change the conversation: You don't need to be the fixer, let your students figure out more themselves

Stephen's Web ~ The Propaganda behind Personalised Learning

Stephen's Web ~ The Propaganda behind Personalised Learning | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
This is a more recent article from Benjamin Doxtdator on personalized learning (the previous one cited was from July). "Chomsky and Herman describe how five filters – media ownership, revenue through advertising, reliance on official sources, flak, and anticommunist ideology – shape not only the opinions expressed in the media, but the selection of what is newsworthy in the first place," he writes. "Here, I slightly modify their filters to examine how the venture philanthropy (specifically, The74 and EdSurge) media frames personalised learning."

Heutagogy and Personalized Learning…There is a Difference!

Heutagogy and Personalized Learning…There is a Difference! | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Many educators think that Personalized Learning (student driven learning) and Heutagogy are the same thing. They have many similarities but also many differences that I have illustrated in the chart below. The biggest difference is that with a Heutagogy approach the learner determines what they want to learn; it is not determined by curriculum or standards.

Some of the things we think about when designing personalized learning curriculum. What else do you think about? ~Mia

Beth Dichter's curator insight, November 26, 2014 9:00 PM

This infographic, byt Mia MacMeekin, looks at personalized learning and the three areas below. In each area the question is also "How can curriculum design address personalized learning?"

What are the three areas?

* What is personalized learning

* How to personalize learning

* Examples of personalized learning

In each of these areas she also looks at the How, What, When, Where, and Why, providing key words or phrases that help you dig a little deeper into the subject.

Mia MacMeekin has provided an infographic that you could share with others in your building. Today we are asked to personalize curriculum, but support is not always available. This visual will help you better understand some key concepts, and provide you with ideas on how you might move forward.
