“How do you keep students engaged and on task?"

“How do you keep students engaged and on task?" | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
“How do you keep students engaged and on task?” I am frequently asked this question when I train teachers on blended learning models. The concern implied in this question is that if I am not working directly with students that they will immediately be off task or disruptive. In actuality, classroom management has never been a big issue for me. In part, I credit my lesson design for keeping them interested, engaged, and on task. I blend a mix of online and offline work that allows students opportunities to self-pace through activities, work collaboratively with their peers, and make key decisions about how they learn.

The good thing about having several teachers is that if one of them is not very good, you only have him or her for part of the day. Also, shuffling from class to class breaks up the monotony and allows for brief jokey chats in the hallway. During class, side conversations seem to sprout when a class goes above five students. Chaos is logarithmic. One micro-class made up of one, or two, or three students, plus a sympathetic tutor, can get more done in an hour than a roomful of 25 bored, loud fidgeters plus a shouting, pleading instructor can accomplish in a week.

Behaviors & Strategies for Improving Your Instructor Presence

Behaviors & Strategies for Improving Your Instructor Presence | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Establishing a connection with online learners is a demonstrated strategy for increasing student motivation in online classes (Jones, Kolloff & Kolloff, 2008) and a marker of instructor excellence (Palloff & Pratt, 2011). Employing the the behaviors and strategies noted below is an effective step towards making your online students' learning more relevant and increasing their investment in your class (DuCharme-Hansen, Dupin-Bryant, 2005).

If Collaboration Makes Us Better, Why Aren't More Leaders Doing It? - Peter DeWitt's Finding Common Ground - Education Week

If Collaboration Makes Us Better, Why Aren't More Leaders Doing It? - Peter DeWitt's Finding Common Ground - Education Week | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
What puts leaders at risk of failure is that too many of them believe they have to be experts at every single one of those responsibilities. After all, they were hired to lead? This is where we need to foster a change in mindset, because no one can meet all of the demands of leadership by themselves. And no one, needs to be an expert at everything. What leaders need is the belief that they can meet those demands by working collaboratively with their staff and school community.

David Alzate's curator insight, December 1, 2017 9:10 AM
In aiming for full engagement, it is essential that students perceive activities as being meaningful. Research has shown that if students do not consider a learning activity worthy of their time and effort, they might not engage in a satisfactory way, or may even disengage entirely in response (Fredricks, Blumenfeld, & Paris, 2004). To ensure that activities are personally meaningful, we can, for example, connect them with students' previous knowledge and experiences, highlighting the value of an assigned activity in personally relevant ways. Also, adult or expert modeling can help to demonstrate why an individual activity is worth pursuing, and when and how it is used in real life.

Syllabus: Humanizing Online Learning

Syllabus: Humanizing Online Learning | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Michelle Pacansky-Broc:

"When students relate to an online instructor as something more than a subject matter expert and begin to conceive of themselves as part of a larger community, they are more likely to be motivated, be satisfied with their learning, and succeed in achieving the course objectives (Picciano, 2002; Rovai & Barnum, 2003; Richardson & Swan, 2003). The end goals of humanized online learning are fostered through integrating learners voices, engaging students in the active construction of knowledge, fostering emotional connections, and providing students with choices. Ultimately, humanized learning increases the relevance of content to learners and improves one's motivation to log-in week-after-week."
